Chaminade College Preparatory (CASE STUDY)

Chaminade College Preparatory — recognized as a National Blue Ribbon school — is a Catholic private school in the Marianist tradition located in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles County. Named after William Joseph Chaminade, the founder of Society of Mary, it was initially an all boys school, and became co-educational in 1972 with the first female graduates in the Class of 1974. Chaminade was identified by Los Angeles Times reporter Eric Sondheimer as one of the elite preparatory schools contributing to the professionalization of high-school sports.

My initial task was to reimagine the main logomark. Although Chaminade's leadership was hesitant to move away from key elements like the book and the eagle's head, once I redesigned the logo, removing those features, they quickly embraced the simplicity of the new design. The flowing blue and orange ribbons represent the school’s dynamic energy, while the bold shape of the shield aims to contain them within its boundaries. I selected vibrant, gradient colors for the ribbons and positioned a solid interpretation of the Marianist symbol and cross against a neutral backdrop.

For Chaminade’s 60th anniversary, they needed an admissions piece that was both unique and impactful. I designed an elegant folder to hold a multi-page booklet and also created the tagline “We Educate For Life,” which became the cornerstone of their campaign that year. This piece was so well-received that Chaminade reprinted it for three consecutive years. I oversaw the printing process and selected a recycled matte paper for its textured feel, which added a comforting tactile experience when handled.

Chaminade approached me to assist with their Summer campaign, a program designed for children ages 5 to 17. I was responsible for designing and printing their multi-page program, as well as creating their posters and postcards. Additionally, I designed their outdoor banners and managed the printing and installation process.

Chaminade regards athletics as an essential part of a student's overall education. Their program focuses on fostering positive behavior and supports the spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual, creative, and physical development of each student. Chaminade athletes have earned recognition at both the state and national levels.
